Chicago-based Photographer, Camera Operator, and Writer
Courtney Mitchell is self-taught photographer and camera operator based in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Mitchell began her journey as a photographer at the age of 12, when she was gifted with a five megapixel Traveler Digital Camcorder. Filled with creative spark, Mitchell found herself photographing everything nature had to offer including: trees, sunsets, and flowers. When she turned 18, Mitchell received a Mirrorless Sony NEX-F3 camera, and the journey into professional photography began.
Immersing herself into the professional photography business, she honed in on her skills and obtained a Canon 80D DSLR at 22. Since then, she has taken portraits of local artists across Chicago, photographed events and concerts such as ACEN and House of Blues’ “Bringing Down the House”, and exploring landscape photography.
In 2018, Mitchell teamed up with local director Aaron Evans to film and produce their first short film named “I’m Good”. The film is about a young black man taking a closer look at his personal relationships while battling with PTSD. Upon completion, the film was submitted to the Chicago Film Festival. Though the film was not selected, this was one of the biggest leaps in the film industry the duo has ever made.
Aside from her passion for photography and film, Mitchell has also been writing since the age of seven. When she was in elementary school, she won a bronze medal in the Young Author’s competition for her book “The Mysterious Orange Ball”. In her adult years, she achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing: Fiction Writing at Columbia College Chicago (CCC) on May 14th, 2016. She was acknowledged academically by receiving a place on the Dean’s List for three years, and an inductee of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Mitchell was also a featured literary performer at CCC for their senior arts showcase “Manifest”, as well as a number of student hosted open mics while attending Columbia.
